Quick Reminder to Not Give Away Your Salary Requirement in a Job Interview

Imagen
I know I've read this here before but had a real-life experience with it yesterday that I thought I'd share.Going into the interview I was hoping/expecting that the range for the salary would be similar to where I am now. When the company recruiter asked me what my target salary was, I responded by asking, "What is the range for the position?" to which they responded with their target, which was $30k more than I was expecting/am making now. Essentially, if I would have given the range I was hoping for (even if it was +$10k more than I am making it now) I still would have sold myself short.Granted, this is just an interview and not an offer- but I'm happy knowing that I didn't lowball myself from the getgo. via /r/personalfinance http://ift.tt/2Db7JD6 I know I've read this here before but had a real-life experience with it yesterday that I thought I'd share. How I Got My Identity Thief Arrested

Imagen
This happened last week, and I got an identity thief located hundreds of miles away from me arrested. At 6:45pm, I received a text message alert notifying me of a transaction on one of my credit cards for the amount of $51.87 from one of the largest PIZZA chains here in the US. Since I did not make this purchase I knew right away that someone must have gotten my CC somehow, and used it to purchase some dinner. I had to act fast, I phoned my card company and got through to a representative who located the charge. I informed him that this was a fraudulent transaction and if they could provide me with the Pizza Chain’s store number or any information that merchants include like a zip code or store number. He read off a series of numbers which I assumed was a store # so I Google’d that along with Pizza Restaurant. I was told the transaction would be covered under the company’s fraud reversal program. The store number brings up a location 500 miles away but in the same time zone. Since this...

I thought I was paranoid, but I got phished. Read my shameful account of said phishing so they don't get you too.

I have different passwords for every website I log into, 2-factor authentication when possible; I thought I knew all the scams and could spot them a mile away. This one still got me.I was meeting a friend at a bar. Two drinks in I got a call from someone identified by my phone as Wells Fargo. I'm fully aware this could be spoofed, but it did not raise alarm bells yet. I was at a bar I did not frequent and have gotten calls from my bank before on suspicious charges that were legit, so I answered expecting this to be the case. The person I spoke with said they were with Wells Fargo and they've identified fraudulent charges on my account but they need to verify my identity before they can discuss details. They said they sent me a text message (via the cell number they just called, which is my first clue this is phishing). They asked me to read back to them the 6-digit number just texted to me to verify my ID. Being two drinks in, slightly expecting what this was about, I had zero ...

Warren Buffet just won his ten-year bet about index funds outperforming hedge funds

https://medium.com/the-long-now-foundation/how-warren-buffett-won-his-multi-million-dollar-long-bet-3af05cf4a42d"Over the years, I’ve often been asked for investment advice, and in the process of answering I’ve learned a good deal about human behavior. My regular recommendation has been a low-cost S&P 500 index fund. To their credit, my friends who possess only modest means have usually followed my suggestion.I believe, however, that none of the mega-rich individuals, institutions or pension funds has followed that same advice when I’ve given it to them. Instead, these investors politely thank me for my thoughts and depart to listen to the siren song of a high-fee manager or, in the case of many institutions, to seek out another breed of hyper-helper called a consultant."..."Over the decade-long bet, the index fund returned 7.1% compounded annually. Protégé funds returned an average of only 2.2% net of all fees. Buffett had made his point. When looking at returns, f...

If you work for a non-profit, state, or federal government entity for 10 years, you are eligible for student loans to be forgiven.

If you haven’t heard, you are eligible to have student loans forgiven if you work for a non-profit, or governmental entity for 10 years. You must make the minimum and never miss a payment. The Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) Program forgives the remaining balance on your Direct Loans after you have made 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan while working full-time for a qualifying employer. via: Student Loan ForgivenessPersonal story: My wife is currently on this plan and will only pay out a total of $24,000 over the 10 year period. This is much less than her student loan total (bachelors, masters degree, and multiple certifications).Edit: I’m seeing a common theme of “why should the tax payers front this money?” This was setup for individuals who prefer to major in areas that don’t pay well and serve the community around them (social workers, nurses, caregivers, etc.). These people can major in business and make money, but prefer to help the communit...

Warning: AT&T applying "customer loyalty speed upgrades" without customer consent

Imagen
So over the holiday I received an email with an order confirmation from AT&T (my ISP, and the only one available in my area) and it had a new bill amount (about $5/month higher).I haven't ordered anything so the first thing I thought was maybe someone got a hold of my account number or personal info and changed it. I immediately logged in to check out my plan and make sure everything was in order. I had a notification that showed that AT&T had "upgraded my internet speed at no extra charge"Obviously I was annoyed by this, so I dug a little deeper to figure out why the bill had changed. I then found this alert showing that the "promotional discount" for this so-called "customer loyalty speed upgrade" would expire in a month and my bill would go up $20 more per month.I then looked at my bill and found that the had upgraded my plan to the highest speed and most expensive plan they have without my consent, under the guise of "customer loyalty...

Unpopular Opinion: Pet's are luxury items that you should only own when you can actually afford it

Imagen
I see posts on here by struggling people scrounging money to pay for rent or emergency bills that come up. And yet one massive expense they don't seem to realize is that pet ownership is a LUXURY. If you're 20 year old student or right out of college then why are you owning a pet? You're burdening yourself with potentially thousands or more in yearly expenses that will only hurt your personal finances in the long run. You have to not only have an emergency fund for yourself but what if your pet falls ill and needs $3,000 in vet bills? Add to that Toys, food, checkups etc... 9/10 times these people dump the unwanted pet on craigslist or a shelter when they realize they have to chose between paying rent and paying for fido's flee shots. A very heartless thing. Instead of thinking ahead before getting a pet in the first place and making a smart and sound financial decision. When should you get a pet? After you 1) Have a stable job 2) Have little to zero debt 3) Invested in...

Good morning. I just got off of the phone with my bank and they're refusing to give me any information about my account because of a "FCC Confidential Hold".I woke up this morning to my daily available balance email, which should've told me I had around $2k from my payroll that went in last night but it told me my account is overdrawn by half a million dollars. I can't login to my internet banking, the bank has disabled my login. Can someone help me understand what a FCC Hold is and why I am overdrawn by $500k? I've never had that much money in my life. via /r/personalfinance http://ift.tt/2xUOoIj Good morning.
